The New York University wrestling team, #24 in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Team Rankings, saw several young grapplers shine at the Simpson College Invitational in Indianola, IA, on Saturday.
Overall, NYU placed 11th of 17 teams with 31.5 points. Wartburg College, ranked #2 in Division III, won with 187.5 points.
Although no NYU grappler ended up a place-winner, head coach Bruce Haberli was pleased with several efforts as four wrestlers reached the quarterfinals of their respective wrestleback weight classes.
Freshman John Dack made the biggest impression on Haberli. After overcoming an illness, Dack picked up a pair of victories in the championship bracket before bowing 8-6 to #3-seeded Curtis Barber of Simpson College. The rookie went 1-1 in the wrestlebacks to finish 3-2 on the day.
Junior Joseph Ranzenbach picked up four victories in the 133-pound wrestleback after losing his opening match, reaching the quarterfinal of the consolation bracket before finishing the evening 4-2.
Senior tri-captains Nick Coleman (184 pounds) and James Layman (285) each reached the quarterfinals in their respective championship brackets, then went 1-1 while earning spots in their respective wrestleback brackets. Overall, Coleman and Layman each went 3-2.
Coleman, a 2007 NCAA All-American who finished sixth nationally, was seeded second in his class. He pinned Dan McGee of Central Missouri University in 3:23 in his first bout, then outpointed Dana College's Jon Wilbourne 8-3 in his second-round match. However, he bowed 10-6 to Upper Iowa's Tony Gehling in the quarters of the championship bracket before splitting two wrestleback bouts.
Seeded sixth at 285, Layman produced major-decision triumphs over Waldorf College's Eric White (13-2) and Missouri Baptist College's Gralian Nash (8-0). Layman lost 6-0 to #3 seed and eventual champion Brian Borchers of Wartburg, before going 1-1 in his two consolation matches.
