#24 Wrestling Rolls Past Yeshiva

The New York University wrestling team recorded victories in seven of the eight bouts contested, including each of the final six, to record a 48-4 victory over Yeshiva University its home opener Tuesday night at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Ranked #24 in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Team Rankings released earlier in the day, NYU improved to 1-1. Meanwhile, the Maccabees dropped their season opener.

Freshman Anthony Benigno earned his first collegiate victory, outpointing Yeshiva's Benjamin Krohn 15-8 at 174 pounds. Krohn put Benigno on his back and led 6-2 before the NYU rookie roared ahead with a takedown and a pair of three-point back calls in the second period.

Freshman Gregg Martino improved to 4-2 with his first collegiate pin, flattening Yeshiva's Ariel Simchi in 2:27. Junior Greg Accetta (3:56 over Jeremy Jaffe at 157) and sophomore Michael Cunningham (1:41 over Yechiel Michael Twersky at 184) also won by fall as NYU head coach Bruce Haberli used the match to assess his squad's depth.

"For some of these guys, this was their introduction to college wrestling," Haberli said. "We learned some things about these guys, and that was the silver lining more than the victory."

Other highlights for NYU included junior Andrew Cotlov's 9-1 major decision over Benjamin Benson at 149 and sophomore Sean Connors' 17-2 technical fall in 5:53 over Max Saltzman.

Sophomore Byron Tuyay (125), junior Mark Shirian (197) and sophomore Tyler Jeffries (HWT) each won by forfeit.

NYU returns to action Saturday, Nov. 17, when it travels to #27 Oneonta State University for the Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational. Haberli's bunch won the tournament team title there last November.
