
Women's Volleyball Upsets #2 New Jersey City, Advances in ECAC Tournament

The #7-seeded New York University women's volleyball team knocked off the #2-seeded New Jersey City University 3-1 on the road Wednesday, November 7, in Jersey City, NJ. The Violets now advances to the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Championship in Pittsburgh, PA.
NYU (19-18) got off to a slow start, trading points with the Gothic Knights (28-6) early in game one. The Violets reeled off four straight points after the game was tied at 14 and never looked back, taking game one 30-20.
NYU came out strong in game two, pulling away after the game was tied at seven. NJCU responded however, after falling behind 29-25, They won the final six points of the game, taking it 31-29.
The Violets never trailed in game three and only trailed 2-1 in game four as NYU reeled off two quick wins, 30-22 and 30-19, to seal the victory.
Leading the Violets to victory was outside hitter Nicole Lubell. The senior followed up her career performance against the University of Rochester with another stellar outing, putting down a team-high 24 kills, the second highest kill total of her career, while also hitting a team-best .476.
Two freshmen were also critical on offense for NYU. Middle Erin Noonan put down 12 kills and added two service aces, three digs and a block, while Bethany Burr recorded a career-high 14 kills while hitting .357 for the match.
On the back line, freshman Rachel Sawyer and junior captain Stacy Goto teamed up to help shut down the NJCU attack. Sawyer recorded a team-high 17 digs while Goto added 10 as NYU held the Gothic Knights, a team that has hit .262 for the season, to an .055 hitting percentage with only 35 kills.
"I was very proud with the way our team performed in a postseason environment," NYU head coach Ed Caesar commented after the victory. "The team proved tonight how much progress we have made throughout the season. We had a lot of players step up when we needed them and because of that we shut down a very strong offense and one of the top middles in the country."
The Violets (18-17) will now face University Athletic Association rival, #3 seed Carnegie Mellon University (21-15), in Pittsburgh on Saturday at 3:30 pm. That match will be preceded by a 1:00 pm tilt between top-seeded Johns Hopkins University and #5 Washington & Jefferson College.
