Women's Volleyball Falls in Second Round of NYSWCAA Championship

The New York University women's volleyball team fell to SUNY Brockport in a five-game heartbreaker in the second round of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Volleyball Championship, Saturday, October 27, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

NYU had won the previous four NYSWCAA Championships.

The Violets (15-16), seeded fifth in the championship, fell to the fourth-ranked Golden Eagles (20-13) 30-27, 18-30, 26-30, 30-23, 15-12. NYU will now face #8-seeded Clarkson University on Sunday in the fifth-place match.

NYSWCAA Rookie of the Year Erin Noonan led the way on offense for the Violets, putting down a team-high 20 kills while adding a service ace and five digs.

Three other Violets recorded double-digit kills. Freshman Julia Rickert notched 12 kills and added five blocks, while fellow freshman Adrienne Spohr chipped in 14 kills.

Senior Nicole Lubell added 15 kills and three blocks for NYU.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Rachel Sawyer continued her strong play, putting up a team-best 19 digs, while senior Samantha Bivens added 18 more.

The Violets return to the court tomorrow for their showdown against Clarkson. First serve is set for 12:00 pm.
