Women's Volleyball Edges Chicago at Round Robin #2

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated the University of Chicago 3-2 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2, Saturday, October 13 at Case Western University in Cleveland, OH.

The Violets (14-13, 3-2 UAA) traded games with the Maroons (4-17, 0-5 UAA) with NYU taking games 1, 3 and 5 while Chicago took games 2 and 4 (30-24, 21-30, 30-27, 27-30, 15-12).

Leading the way for the Violets in the victory was freshman Erin Noonan, who recorded a team-high 19 kills, including her 300th of the season, while hitting a career-best .500 (19-3-32) for the match. She also notched three assisted blocks, three service aces and five digs.

Also instrumental in NYU's success was senior Nicole Lubell, who recorded 15 kills including six in the pivotal fifth game to help secure the victory.

Freshman Annie Baer ran the offense to perfection, putting up 53 assists, her fifth 50-plus assist match of the season. She also added nine digs, three kills and two service aces.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Rachel Sawyer led the way with a career-high 21 digs while also adding two service aces.

Three other Violets also recorded double-digit digs including senior Samantha Bivens (11), freshman Anna Koehler, and senior captain Stacy Goto (14).

In their first match of the day, the Violets fell to the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans (13-9, 3-2 UAA) 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-25).

On offense, Noonan led the way for NYU by recording 16 kills and hitting .423.

Two other freshmen were strong for the Violets with Sawyer recording a team-high 10 digs along with two service aces, while Baer recorded 32 set assists, five kills and four digs.

The Violets return to action tomorrow for the final day of UAA Round Robin play. The team will take on host Case Western at 9:00 am and #7-ranked Washington University - St. Louis at 11:30 am. UAA Round Robin results will determine the seedings for the UAA Championship at the University of Rochester, November 3-4.

Currently the Violets are tied for third place with Brandeis University and Carnegie Mellon.
