09/20/07
The New York University women's volleyball team came from behind to defeat Vassar College in five games in front of a vocal crowd on Wednesday night in Poughkeepsie, NY.
After winning the first game 30-25, the Violets dropped the next two games by identical 30-27 scores.
However, NYU rallied to take the fourth game 30-15, then eked out a 16-14 win in game five to complete the comeback.
Leading the way for the 8-5 Violets were their freshmen middle blockers. Erin Noonan put down a career-best 20 kills and hit a team-high .366. She also added five blocks and three service aces. Julia Rickert added eight more kills and put down a career-best eight blocks, including two solos.
Senior Nicole Lubell recorded her fifth consecutive double-digit kill match, putting down 12 while also adding three blocks.
The team was also fueled by the defensive trio of freshmen Rachel Sawyer and Anna Koehler, as well as junior co-captain Stacy Goto. Goto recorded a team-best 19 digs, while Sawyer and Koehler notched 12 and 10 digs respectively.
Freshman Annie Baer put up 44 assists and added a season-best five blocks.
"It was great to watch the team compete and succeed in a spirited environment," commented NYU head coach Ed Caesar. "The young players are gaining confidence every day and the results are starting to show."
The Violets return to action this weekend when they travel to Decatur, Illinois, to compete in the 5th Annual Linda Slagell Volleyball Classic hosted by Millikin University. NYU will begin the weekend with a match against Albion College at 3pm CDT on Friday.
