
Women's Volleyball Places Seventh at RIT Invitational

The New York University women's volleyball team fell to SUNY Cortland and defeated SUNY Fredonia on the second day of play and placed seventh overall at the RIT Invitational in Rochester, NY.
The Violets began the day by falling to the Red Dragons in its second hard-fought five-game match of the weekend (30-15, 23-30, 30-18, 21-30, 15-9).
NYU then rebounded in the seventh-place match, defeating the Blue Devils in four (30-25, 24-30, 30-15, 30-27).
Leading the way for the second day in a row was senior Nicole Lubell. She recorded a team-high 16 kills against Cortland and 12 more against Fredonia, bringing her weekend total to 59.
Also strong on the second day of play was freshman Erin Noonan, who recorded 13 kills against both Cortland and Fredonia. She also added five total blocks and eight service aces on the weekend.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior co-captain Stacy Goto led the way with team highs of 16 digs against Cortland and 23 against Fredonia. Both were team highs.
Freshman Annie Baer put up a personal-best 52 assists and added five digs, three blocks and two service aces against Fredonia.
In pool play on Friday NYU defeated St. John Fisher College and fell to SUNY Geneseo to go 1-1 in Pool C.
The Violets took the first game against Geneseo 30-24, but dropped the next two to the Blue Knights 30-27, 30-23. NYU bounced back to take the fourth game 30-24, but dropped the deciding fifth game 15-7.
Lubell put down a team-best 13 kills for the Violets, while Noonan and fellow freshman Julia Rickert added 11 each.
Goto and fellow junior co-captain Caitlin Grundman also had strong matches for NYU. Grundman put up 46 assists and added 12 digs, while Goto dug up a team-high 19 balls.
Against St. John Fisher College, the Violets won 3-0 (30-28, 30-17, 30-21).
Lubell put down a team-high 18 kills while hitting .382 in the match, while Grundman had 35 assists, eight kills and hit a team-best .583. Goto added team highs in both service aces (4) and digs (11).
After going 1-1 and taking second in Pool C play, the Violets advanced to play SUNY Cortland at 12pm on Saturday in bracket competition.
The Violets return to action this Wednesday when they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY, to face Vassar College. First serve is set for 7pm.
