After enjoying one of the finest regular seasons in program history, the New York University men's volleyball team will now enjoy the spoils of postseason play.
Seeded #8, the Violets (21-7) will travel to face rival and #5-seeded Juniata College (10-14) in the first round of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA)/NCAA East Regionals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Juniata, PA.
This will be NYU's seventh EIVA/NCAA playoff appearance, and first since 2004. The last six of those appearances have come under 15th-year head coach Jose Pina, who was an assistant coach on the Violets' first-ever EIVA/NCAA squad in 1992.
In 2008, NYU reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth time under Pina, with their 21 victories lagging only behind the 24-7 mark posted by the 2002 team that won the EIVA Division III Championship.
The Violets possess a pair of All-Americans in senior Jonathan Wintermeyer and freshman Francis Hodgson, who were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-American First and Second Teams, respectively.
During the regular season, NYU split its two matches with Juniata. After the Eagles recorded a three-game sweep on Feb. 1 at home, the Violets posted an easy three-game triumph on March 16 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center for their first victory over Juniata since April 6, 2002.
