
Men's Volleyball Falls in Heartbreaker at Springfield

The New York University men's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against EIVA Hay division rival Springfield College on Friday, April 4, in Springfield, MA.
The Violets (20-7, 7-2 EIVA Hay), currently ranked #2 in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, took the first two games from the Pride (18-6, 9-1 EIVA Hay) 30-24, 30-27. Springfield rallied, however, taking the final three 30-28, 30-21, 15-13.
Leading the way for NYU on offense was junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski, who put down 20 kills and added four digs and three blocks while going 58-for-58 in service receptions.
Four other Violets were in double-digits on offense. Senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer notched 17 kills while adding four blocks. Sophomore Eric Chakeen tallied 12 kills while digging up five balls. Senior Willy McFarland added a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, and freshman Francis Hodgson put down 11 kills and hit a team-best .429 while adding five blocks.
Senior tri-captain David Tener made NYU history by tallying eight digs and pulling into a tie with Thom Stone for the all-time rally-scoring record with 662.
For Springfield, AJ Nally recorded a team-best 19 kills while hitting .341 with 10 digs.
Eric Shoemaker put up a team-best 37 assists in three games for the Pride, while Brandon Waas added a team-high 12 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Fairfield, CT, to take on EIVA Hay opponent Sacred Heart University for their regular- season finale. First serve is set for 2:00 pm.
