Men's Volleyball Sweeps Princeton for First Win Over Rival Since 2002

Senior tri-captain Jonathan Wintermeyer, junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski and freshman Francis Hodgson combined for 41 of the Violets' 56 kills and collectively hit .484 as the New York University men's volleyball team swept Division I Princeton University 3-0 on Tuesday, April 1, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The victory, which came in the Violets' 2008 home finale, was the program's first over the Tigers since February 21, 2002, a span of 12 matches.

The Violets (20-6), currently ranked #2 in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top-15 Poll, came out firing in game one, jumping out to a 10-6 lead. The Tigers (9-7) slowly climbed back, tying the game at 21-21, but back-to-back kills by Zolnowski and senior Willy McFarland sealed the game 30-26.

In game two, the two teams traded points from the start, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. Late in the game, after the Tigers tied it at 25-25, the Violets took five out of the next six points to triumph 30-26.

In game three, the Violets jumped out to a 10-6 lead and did not relinquish it. Wintermeyer put down the final kill of both the match and his Coles career to give NYU the final game 30-27.

"This was another great match for us," said head coach Jose Pina. "It was good to have our seniors have a win against such a high-level opponent in their last match at home."

For the Violets on offense, Zolnowski put down a team-high 18 kills while adding four digs and two blocks.

In the middle for NYU, Wintermeyer had 14 kills while hitting .565 with six blocks. Hodgson added nine kills while hitting .583 with two blocks.

The back line for NYU did not allow a service ace for the first time since March 6, 2007, going 71-for-71 in service receptions against the Tigers.

Senior tri-captain David Tener went 23-for-23 in receptions and dug up nine balls, pulling within eight digs of tying the all-time record of 662.

Leading the way offensively for Princeton was senior Peter Eichler, who put down 16 kills while adding four digs.

Junior setter Brandon Denham set 33 assists for the Tigers while sophomore Carl Hamming dug up a team-high five balls.

The Violets will now prepare for their biggest match of the season when they travel to Springfield, MA, to take on EIVA Hay Division rival Springfield College on Friday at 7 p.m. At stake for will be a trip to the 2008 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship, the EIVA Hay crown and a promotion to the EIVA Tait Division. The Violets won the first match between the two teams this season in a thrilling 3-2 win on February 29.
