The New York University men's volleyball team defeated EIVA Hay Division rival Rutgers-Newark for the first time since 2004, earning a 3-1 victory on Tuesday, March 4, in Newark, New Jersey.
The Violets (14-5, 5-1 EIVA Hay), currently ranked #3 in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll, defeated the Scarlet Raiders (5-11, 3-4 EIVA Hay) 36-34, 26-30, 30-26, 30-17, en route to their seventh consecutive victory and fourth consecutive division victory.
"I am very happy with the high level of play the team is showing right now," said head coach Jose Pina. "Most aspects of our game are very strong right now. We just need to improve the consistency of our serving to get to the next level."
Leading the way for NYU was sophomore Eric Chakeen who recorded 17 kills and hit a team best .438 while adding five digs and three blocks.
Three other Violets recorded double-digit kills, including junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski (16), senior Willy McFarland (12) and senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer (11).
Junior setter Ilan Goldstein put up 53 assists while adding four digs and a service ace.
The Violets return to action next Tuesday, March 11, when they return to Newark to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
