
Men's Volleyball Tears Springfield Down in Five

Junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski notched a double-double with 22 kills and 10 digs as the New York University men's volleyball team stunned EIVA Hay Division rival Springfield College in a come-from-behind 3-2 victory on Friday, February 29, in front of 715 fans at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (12-5, 3-1 EIVA Hay), currently ranked #6 in the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Top 15 Men's Coaches Poll, fell behind quickly to the #3 Pride (11-5, 4-1 EIVA Hay) in game one, eventually dropping it 30-19.
NYU turned it around quickly, however ,in game two, jumping out to a 20-10 lead and never looking back, taking it 30-21.
Down 29-27 in game three, the Violets scored the final four points, capped by a block by junior Ilan Goldstein and senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer to take the game 31-29.
In the fourth game. the Pride took the lead early at 8-7 and ran with it, winning 30-23 to force a game five.
In the fifth game, Wintermeyer took over. The captain recorded three crucial blocks, two kills and a point-saving dig to lead the Violets to a 15-13 win and 3-2 match victory.
"It was a great come-from-behind victory for our team," said NYU head coach Jose Pina. "We showed great perseverance in being able to recoup from two bad game losses. It was an all-around great match."
In total, Wintermeyer put down 14 kills while adding four blocks, including two solos, and two digs.
Sophomore Eric Chakeen also stepped up for NYU, putting down a career-best 15 kills while adding four blocks and seven digs.
Freshman middle Francis Hodgson continued his strong play, recording 13 kills while hitting a team-best .385 and also contributing a team-best seven blocks.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior tri-captain David Tener recorded 20 digs and passed Anthony Spangler for second in career-digs during the rally-scoring era. Tener, who now has 570 career digs, also went 28-28 on service receptions for the match.
Setter Braden Fujikawa ran a powerful offense that out-killed Springfield 74-59. Individually, the sophomore put up 61 assists while adding seven digs and two blocks.
Next up for NYU will be Hay Division and Division I opponent Sacred Heart University on Sunday, March 2. First serve is set for 2:00 pm at the Coles Sports Center.
