02/27/08

Five players recorded double-digit kills as the New York University men's volleyball team held a 67-46 edge in kills in a 3-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, February 27, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (11-5), currently ranked #6 in the CSTV/ AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top-15 Poll, jumped out to an early 12-4 lead over the #8 Ducks (9-9) in game one on their way to a 30-18 win.

Game two proved to be a different story with Stevens jumping out to a quick lead and never looking back, winning it 30-19.

Games three and four were both much closer affairs. But, in the end NYU found a way to pull them both out 30-26, 30-25 on its way to avenging a 3-1 loss to the Ducks earlier this season.

Leading the way on offense for the Violets was junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski, who notched a match-high 17 kills while hitting .343 with eight digs.

Also strong on offense were the two middles, senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer and freshman Francis Hodgson. Wintermeyer recorded 13 kills while hitting .381 with six blocks. Hodgson notched 12 kills while hitting a team-best .500 with three blocks and three service aces.

Junior setter Ilan Goldstein notched a double-double with 60 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Eric Chakeen and senior Willy McFarland both recorded 12 kills.

The Violets return to action this Friday night when they host EIVA Hay Division rival #3 Springfield College with first place in the division on the line. The match will also be a "Tear It Up!" event with free food a t-shirts for all students in attendance. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
