
Men's Volleyball Sweeps New Haven for First Hay Division Win

The New York University men's volleyball team out-killed the University of New Haven 47-27 on its way to a 3-0 sweep and its first EIVA (Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) Hay Division win of the 2008 season on Wednesday, February 20, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (8-5, 1-1 EIVA Hay), currently ranked #5 in the CSTV/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, jumped out to an 18-8 lead in game one. However, the Chargers (6-6, 0-3 EIVA Hay) quickly rallied, getting as close as 28-27 and 29-28 before a kill by Violets' junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski sealed the game at 30-28.
NYU again jumped out to a quick lead in game two, and this time never looked back. The Violets secured a 30-21 win as sophomore Michael Ferragonio put down six kills in the game while Zolnowski tallied four more.
Game three proved to be a seesaw affair with the Chargers taking the lead to start the game. The Violets quickly rallied to grab the lead at 8-7 and stretched it to 15-10, But, New Haven reeled off 11 of the next 12 points to take its largest lead of the match at 21-16. NYU turned the tables, however, taking 14 of the next 17 points to take the game 30-24 and the match 3-0.
For the contest, Zolnowski recorded a team-high 11 kills along with six digs and a service ace.
Senior tri-captain Jonathan Wintermeyer was second on the team in kills with eight while hitting .353 and tallying a team-best and career-high four service aces.
Freshman Ori Oren, sophomore Braden Fujikawa and junior Ilan Goldstein shared the setting duties in the match. Fujikawa and Goldstein put up 14 apiece, while Oren added 11 of his own.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior tri-captain David Tener led the team in digs for the ninth time this season, putting up seven on the night. During the match, he also surpassed the 100-dig mark for the third time in as many seasons.
The Violets return to action on Friday, February 22, when they travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take on EIVA Hay rival Harvard University. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
