02/05/08

Senior Captain Jonathan Wintermeyer recorded the third highest hitting percentage (minimum 20 attempts) by an NYU player during the rally-scoring era as the New York University men's volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over Vassar College on Tuesday in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The Violets (7-4), currently ranked #6 in the CSTV/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division III Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll, held a lead for much of game one, but the ninth-ranked Brewers (5-3) rallied back to tie the game at 29-29. A kill by freshman Francis Hodgson and a subsequent bad set by Vassar however, gave NYU the game at 31-29.

The Brewers fought back in game two, taking the lead at 7-6 and never relinquishing it the rest of the way, winning the game 30-23.

In game three, NYU took the lead at 1-0 off a kill by junior captain Devin Zolnowski and never looked back, winning it 30-24.

Game four proved to be a see-saw affair with 10 ties and four lead changes, however that changed late in the match. With the game tied at 20-20, NYU scored 10 of the next 12 points to take the final game 30-22 to win the match.

Along with recording a career-best .700 hitting percentage (16-2-20), Wintermeyer also notched a service ace and five assisted blocks. His 16 kills also put him over the 100-kill threshold for the season, becoming one of only three NYU players to record 100 or more kills in each of their four seasons during the rally-scoring era which began in 2001.

Zolnowski also hit in double-digits, putting down 14 kills along with eight digs, two blocks and a service ace.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior captain David Tener recorded his second double-digit dig match of the season, posting 10 digs while going 16-for-16 on reception attempts.

Junior setter Ilan Goldstein also had a strong match, setting 52 assists, his third fifty-plus assist match of the season, while adding eight digs and three blocks.

The Violets return to action next Tuesday, February 12, when they travel to Princeton, NJ, to take on Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait division member Princeton University. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
