The New York University men's volleyball team hit .402, including .692 in the fourth and final game, to defeat SUNY New Paltz 3-1 in the team's 2008 home opener on Friday night at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (5-1) took the first two games with ease (30-25, 30-23), but then stumbled in game three as the Hawks (1-4) to come away with a 30-26 victory.

However, NYU regained its composure in the fourth game (30-25), putting down 19 kills against only one error to continue its best start since the inception of the rally-scoring era in 2001.

Leading the way on offense for the Violets was senior Willy McFarland, who recorded a career-high 16 kills while hitting .429 and contributing four digs, two blocks and a service ace.

Junior David Coll recorded 13 kills while hitting .500. He also added a career-best seven digs along with a block and a service ace.

Senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer provided a spark off the bench, putting down nine kills in two games while hitting .818.

Junior setter Ilan Goldstein ignited the offense with 55 assists while also adding two kills and four digs.

The Violets return to action Tuesday, January 22, when they play host to Rutgers University-Newark in both team's first EIVA Hay Division match of the season. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
