Men's Volleyball Falls to Penn State in EIVA Final Four
04/24/08
The 2008 season came to an end for the New York University men's volleyball team at the hands of Penn State University 3-0 in the EIVA Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, April 24, in University Park, PA.
"We had lots of confidence going into the match," said head coach Jose Pina in the post-match press conference. "We came in thinking that we're playing the number one team in the country and we have nothing to lose except not trying."
The Violets fought admirably against the top team in the country, holding Penn State (27-1) close in the first half of each game but eventually falling 30-22, 30-21, 30-20.
Leading the way on offense for NYU was junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski who put down a team-best 10 kills while hitting .238. Zolnowski finished the 2008 season with a team-high 423 kills, the third- highest single-season total in NYU rally-scoring history.
"They were a lot harder than any team we've played all season," said Zolnowski. "I swung as hard as possible, trying to get a touch or a tool. As a team, I thought we did really well."
Also strong on offense were senior tri-captain Jonathan Wintermeyer and sophomore Eric Chakeen. Chakeen put down eight kills, while Wintermeyer added six more while hitting a team-best .429. Wintermeyer completed his NYU career with 1,032 kills, third-most all-time in NYU rally scoring history. The middle will also leave NYU holding career records for solo blocks (80), assisted blocks (318), total blocks (398), and games played (379).
On the defensive side of the ball, senior tri-captain David Tener put up two digs to complete his collegiate career with an NYU rally-scoring record of 693. He also leaves NYU with the best career digs per game record of 2.46.
"I have no regrets on how we played tonight," commented Tener after the match. "Once Penn State got a lead, with the way they served it was really tough to come back."
Leading the way for Penn State was Matt Anderson, who put down a match-high 20 kills while hitting .720. Max Holt contributed 16 kills and hit .789 while Luke Murray put up 44 assists for the NIttany Lions.
The Violets finished arguably their greatest season ever with a 27-8 record and their first trip ever to the EIVA Final Four.
"I was really happy with the way we played," concluded Tener. "I am very happy to go out the way we did."
