Women's Track Makes 2008 Debut at Colgate Class of '32 Invite

Bolstered by four runners in the top-six of the 500-meter dash, the New York University women's track and field team made a solid 2008 indoor season debut Saturday at the Colgate University Class of '32 Invitational in Hamilton, NY.

Overall, the Violets finished seventh of 11 teams with 23 points. Colgate won the team title with 167 points.

Senior co-captain Beatrix Jackson led the NYU contingent in the 500-meter dash with the team's top finish of the day, placing second in a time of 1:23.90. Trailing just behind her were freshman Kristen Marshall (1:26.48, fourth), and sophomores Kathryn Shannon (1:32.79, fifth) and Sanishya Fernando (1:33.90, sixth).

Also enjoying a solid start to the indoor campaign was sophomore Maureen Griffin, who appears primed to build off a promising freshman campaign after taking fourth in the shot put (9.73m) and seventh in the 20-lb. weight throw (10.55m).

Senior Tilona Moore took seventh in the triple jump (8.97m) and 10th in the long jump (4.11m), while sophomore Willow Hackett placed eighth in the 55-meter dash (9.91 seconds).

In addition, the Violets' 4x-400-meter relay (4:25.01) and distance medley relay (14:15.32) each turned in fifth-place performances.

NYU returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 2, when it travels to the East Stroudsburg University DeShriver Invitational in East Stroudsburg, PA. The meet begins at 10 a.m.
