Abdallah Sets Men's Track Record at Fastrack Invitational

Senior Hany Abdallah set the New York University men's indoor track & field 3,000 meter record with his performance at the NYU Fastrack Invitational on Friday, February 29, at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan.

Abdallah, a six-time NCAA All-American (3 cross-country, 2 outdoor, 1 indoor), ran a time of 8:19.65 to finish second and set the new NYU standard.

The old mark of 8:20.52 was established in 2004 by Travis Keany.

Earlier in the meet, Abdallah anchored the Violets' second-place distance medley relay team. He, along with seniors Spenser Popeson, Nile Nahar-Brown, and junior Bernier Lauredan Jr., ran a season-best and NCAA "B" qualifying time of 10:05.33.

"After the distance medley, Coach (Nick McDonough)asked if I felt I could break the 3,000 record," Abdallah explained. "I hadn't been planning to run it today."

Abdallah, who has already qualified for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000 meters, couldn't pass up the opportunity.

"For the past four years I couldn't break the record, and I thought it might avoid me again," Abdallah admitted. "I didn't want to leave NYU without it."
