The New York University men's track and field program continued building off its 2007 NCAA Division III National Championship in cross country with several solid performances at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday in Boston.
Junior Jesse Schneider provided the day's highlight for NYU, clocking a personal best and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14:46.66 while taking 11th of 64 competitors in the 5,000-meter run. A member of the Violets' NCAA Cross Country championship squad, Schneider was a provisional qualifier in the outdoor 10,000-meter run in 2007.
Competing in their third meet of the indoor season, there were several Violets who established personal and season bests while fielding most of their best runners for the first time in 2008.
NYU got four commendable efforts in the 3,000-meter run, including the season debut of senior and six-time All-American Hany Abdallah, who posted a time of 8:27.16 to take 20th of 96 competitors. Abdallah is a three-time cross country (2005, 2006, 2007), two-time outdoor (5,000m, 10,000m in 2007) and one-time indoor (5,000m in 2007) All-American.
Also in the 3K, sophomore Calvin Lee (8:46.70, 43rd) and junior Robert Joynt (8:49.03m 45th) notched personal-best times. Freshman Joe McKenney ran a 8:50.71 to place 52nd in his first collegiate 3K race.
Junior Bernier Lauredan, Jr., finished the 800-meter dash in 1:56.39 to take 15th out of 96 runners, his first race in the event after studying abroad last semester. Meanwhile, senior Nile Nahar-Brown clocked a time of 1:07.77 in the 500-meter dash to place 28th of 97.
Lauredan, Jr., and Nahar-Brown ran the middle two legs on NYU's 4x400 relay, which finished in 3:29.04 (20th place). Junior Maciej Szelazek opened the race, while freshman Chris Buford anchored the Violet quartet.
In the one-mile run, senior Spenser Popeson (4:18.28, 27th of 97) and freshman Matt Turlip (4:20.15, 36th) -- who, along with Schneider and Abdallah, were among the top-seven runners on NYU's National Championship cross country squad -- enjoyed personal bests.
"I thought our men had a solid meet," NYU head coach Nick McDonough said. "It was good for our first real hard effort of the season."
NYU will continue its schedule Friday, Feb. 1, at the New York Metro Championships held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory beginning at 11 a.m.
