The New York University men’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams compiled the fifth highest grade point average in Division III to earn 2007 Division III U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team honors.

NYU posted a team GPA of 3.350 to rank fifth of the 47 teams cited. Team recipients must carry a minimum of a cumulative 3.000 average, with selections based upon a combination of athletic and academic achievements.

In addition, four Violets notched placed on the Division III USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team: seniors Jon Phillips and Ryan Williams, as well as juniors Bernier Lauredan, Jr., and Jesse Schneider. This is Lauredan’s second such honor from the USTFCCCA.

Meanwhile, Williams and graduated senior Michael Dulong gained USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team accolades.

Individual honorees must possess at least a 3.25 GPA and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent outdoor championships in their respective event.

The Violets enjoyed strong indoor and outdoor campaigns in 2007. They finished a best-ever tied for 10th at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships as six student-athletes earned All-America honors. At the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, NYU placed 27th as two competitors combined for three All-America awards.

“Our guys had a great year on the track, and worked just as hard in the classroom,” NYU cross country and track and field head coach Nick McDonough said. “They exemplified the true meaning of being a student-athlete.”

Williams earned All-America honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, becoming one of the first two Violets to garner All-America accolades in all three seasons since the NYU athletic program was reclassified as Division III in 1982. Phillips was the national runner-up in the 5,000-meter run during the indoor campaign, while Lauredan Jr. helped the distance medley relay place a program-record fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Schneider was an outdoor provisional qualifier in the 10,000-meter run, but joined Phillips and Williams as cross country All-Americans as NYU finished as the national runner-up last November.
