Women’s Tennis Edged in Final Match of UAA Championship and Finish Sixth
04/19/08
The New York University women's tennis team fell to Brandeis University 5-4 on Saturday, April 19, in St. Louis, MO, in the fifth-place match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
Earlier in the day the Violets defeated the University of Rochester 5-2 in their second game of the tournament.
Due to wet and cold weather in the St. Louis vicinity on Saturday morning, the Violets' match against Rochester was moved to the King's Point Fitness Center in Belleville, Ill.
Despite the move from outdoor courts to indoor courts, NYU, the #6 seed, took an early lead over the Yellowjackets, the #7 seed, by winning two out of the three doubles competitions.
Coming off their strong doubles performance the Violets were then able to win three of their singles matches to capture the decision.
The NYU win over Rochester pitted the Violets against Brandeis University in the fifth-place match.
In their last regular-season match of the year the Violets fell to Brandeis 6-3 in Waltham, MA, after play was moved indoors following inclement weather.
And, for the second time in two weeks, the Violets were unable to top their UAA foe, despite winning all three doubles affairs in both match-ups.
Senior Holly Smith won her #1 doubles match with fellow senior Meggie Smith, defeating Colleen Donnelly and Rachel Rosman of Brandeis 8-2. Holly also won her #1 singles match, defeating Rosman in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Additionally, senior Jaclyn Manning paired up with junior Stephanie Tu and together defeated Gabrielle Helfgott and Mackenzie Gallegos of Brandeis 8-5 in #2 doubles.
Despite NYU’s outstanding doubles play, Holly Smith was the only Violet to come away victorious in the singles competitions, leaving the match in the hands of the Judges.
“Overall, I was pleased with our performance,” NYU head coach Horace Choy remarked. “The effort from the entire team was tremendous. Our three seniors, Meggie Smith, Jaclyn Manning and Holly Smith had outstanding seasons and outstanding careers. The trio will be sorely missed.”
The Violets finished the season at an even 8-8.
