04/18/08

The New York University women's tennis team, seeded #6, fell to host Washington University, the #3 seed, 5-3, in an opening-round match of the University Athletic Association Championship on Friday afternoon in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (7-7) won two of the three doubles matches, but could not keep the momentum in the singles competition, winning only one of the five matches played to completion.

Senior Holly Smith was a double-winner for NYU, taking the #1 singles match and pairing with senior co-captain Meggie Smith (no relation) to capture #1 doubles.

"I was pleased with the way we played. Our players competed well," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "Washington is a very solid team, top to bottom."

The Bears, ranked #14 in the nation, improved to 15-4 with the victory.

The Violets now face #7 seed University of Rochester on Saturday at 9am.
