Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season With a "W"
02/23/08
The New York University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2007-08 season with a 5-4 victory over Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA, on Saturday.
It was a comeback victory for the Violets in the truest sense of the word. Trailing 4-2, NYU rallied to win the final three singles matches to earn the thrilling victory.
After falling in two of the three doubles matches and in two of the first three singles matches that were completed, the Violets (3-3) rallied to sweep the final three singles matches.
First it was senior co-captain Meggie Smith who recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #3 singles. Then, it was junior Amanda Feedman's turn to keep the comeback alive by scoring a 6-0, 6-2 win at #5 singles.
That left it up to freshman Alexandra Havas, whose 6-2, 6-4 win at #6 singles assured the improbable win.
"While things were looking a bit bleak at that point (trailing 4-2), tennis is an individual game and you can't really build momentum from match-to-match," explained NYU head coach Horace Choy. "The result of one match really has nothing to do with the next one."
And that was fortunate for the Violets, as earlier wins by the #1 doubles team of Meggie Smith and senior Holly Smith (8-5), and at #2 singles by junior Stephanie Tu (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) set the table for the later heroics.
