The New York University women's tennis team finished in third place overall and claimed two individual titles at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Tennis Championships (NYSWCAA), which were held Friday-Sunday, October 19-21, at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
The Violets totaled 38 team points to finish behind only Vassar College (50 points) and Skidmore College (44) in the 16-team competition.
NYU senior Holly Smith, who was seeded #3 at third singles, defeated all four of her opponents over the three days en route to the individual title.
On Sunday, she upset top-seeded Kelly Barnett of Vassar 6-0, 6-1 to claim the title.
In Saturday's semifinal, she bageled #2-seed Laura Attley of Skidmore 6-0, 6-0.
Also winning a title for NYU was its #2 doubles tandem of senior co-captain Jaclyn Manning and junior Stephanie Tu.
Though unseeded in the tournament, the duo upset Vassar's top-seeded pair of Nicole Pontee and Jamison Steele 8-6 in Sunday's final.
"I was pleased that we were able to get contributions from everyone in the line-up," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. " I was also very happy with the success of our seniors in their final NY States. We improved by eight points with a team that had four players new to the Championships. It was a nice wrap-up to the fall."
