Women's Tennis' Tu, Meggie Smith Enjoy Strong Starts at ITA's
09/21/07
Senior Meggie Smith and junior Stephanie Tu each earned their way into the round of 16 for New York University’s women’s tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Championships, which are being held Sept. 21-23 at William Smith College in Geneva, NY.
Smith also teamed with fellow senior Holly Smith (no relation) to capture the duo’s first two doubles matches, as the #3-seeded tandem produced victories over Union College’s Hallie Mabrey and Jessica Meola (8-4) in the first round and a duo from SUNY Brockport (8-1) to reach the round of 16.
Seeded #15 in the singles draw, Meggie Smith outlasted Richard Stockton College’s Christy Alexander (6-0, 6-2) and Rachel Leonard of Nazareth College (6-2, 6-4) to set up a round of 16 matchup against #2 Amanda Berg of The College of New Jersey on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, Tu entered as the #16 seed and produced wins over Rochester Institute of Technology’s Joanna Cash (6-1, 6-0) and Casey Gilman of St. Lawrence University (6-3, 6-0) to set up a Saturday morning meeting with #6 Lilia Weiner of the University of Rochester.
“I thought they both played well,” NYU head coach Horace Choy said. “Whenever you play a tournament like this, anything can happen. I thought they played some nice first-round matches working their way into the tournament, and they definitely played better in the second round. I think this will set them both up well for their matches tomorrow.”
Tu also teamed with senior Jaclyn Manning in doubles play to thwart William Smith’s Shari Damon and Samantha Schraeter 8-2 in the first round. However, the pair was eliminated in the second round, 8-6, by #4-seeded Danielle Fancher and Rachel Loeb of Skidmore College.
Also in the singles draw, Holly Smith and Manning both lost their first-round tilts, but rebounded to record consolation-round victories.
Smith dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to #13 Christa Phillips of Richard Stockton, before winning her consolation debut 8-2 over Drew University’s Alex Holzman.
Manning succumbed to William Smith’s Tara Ware 6-4, 6-0, before defeating St. Lawrence University’s Chelsea Hubbell 8-6 in consolation play.
The ITA Northeast Regionals will resume Saturday, Sept. 22, at 8:30 a.m. with play in the championship singles and doubles draws, as well as the consolation singles bracket.
