The New York University men's tennis team dropped its opening match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship to the University of Chicago 6-3 on Friday, April 25 in Atlanta at Emory University.

NYU (8-9) was victorious in their #3 doubles match, as well as their #1 and #4 singles contests. However the Violets could not overcome the strong play of the Maroons, who are currently ranked #21 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Junior captain Calvin Chou teamed up with freshman Matt Gross and together defeated Mark Bonner and Bharath Sithian of Chicago 9-8 (7-4) in the most exciting doubles match of the afternoon.

In addition to the doubles win, senior co-captain Mikhail Gurevich came back from a 5-7 loss in the first set of his #1 singles match to defeat Will Zhang of Chicago 5-7, 7-6, 10-6. Sophomore Eugene Tsarevskiy produced another bright spot for the Violets on the day, winning his #5 singles match over Mark Bonner 6-4, 7-5.

“There were tight matches throughout and we competed well,” said NYU head coach Horace Choy. “I think we’re going to bounce back tomorrow and play well.”
