#14 Men’s Tennis Rallies to Defeat Stevens
04/16/08
The New York University men's tennis team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 6-3 on Wednesday, April 16, in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU, currently ranked #14 in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), had to rally from behind to beat Stevens, who was riding an eight-match winning streak going into the day.
The Violets lost two out of the three doubles matches, then looked toward the singles competition to take control of the match.
And take control they did, winning five out of the six singles competitions to defeat the Ducks. After dropping the first set 6-1 to Zhi Wei Ko of Stevens, senior co-captain Mikhail Gurevich rallied to win the next two sets 7-5, 6-2 in #1 singles.
Gurevich wasn’t the only Violet to produce a come-from-behind victory. Junior Craig Berger overcame a 5-0 deficit in his first set to defeat Ricky Bawa of Stevens 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in #3 singles.
The Violets, who are 8-7 on the season, have won six of their last seven matches.
"It was a good win," commented NYU head coach Horace Choy. "It was important to pick up that first doubles point. I'm pleased with the way our team performed and we're looking forward to facing Aldelphi this upcoming weekend."
The Violets do indeed return to the court on Saturday, April 19, at 5:00pm when the face Adelphi University at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
