Men’s Tennis Defeats UAA Rival

04/12/08

For the fifth time this season, the New York University men's tennis team was involved in a 5-4 decision. And, for the third time, the Violets came out on the winning end.

This time, their 5-4 victory came against University Athletic Association rival Brandeis University on Saturday, April 12, in Waltham, MA.

The victory lifted NYU's season record to 7-7.

In taking two of the three doubles matches over the Judges, senior Mikhail Gurevich and freshman Brett Levin were victorious at #1 doubles, while junior Craig Berger and his partner sophomore Eugene Tsarevskiy captured #2 doubles.

However, Brandeis won three of the first four singles matches to take a 4-3 lead. Then, needing to win both of the singles matches that were still in progress, NYU did just that as sophomores P.J. Marranca and Eugene Tsarevskiy produced the comeback victory.

Marranca, playing at #5, defeated Brandeis' Mayur Kasetty 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 to get the Violets even.

Tsarevskiy, playing at #4, dropped the first set to the Judges' Seth Rogers 3-6, but rebounded to pull out the next two 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the Violet win.

"It was a great showing of play and poise by a couple of sophomores," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "P.J.'s win was a turning point that kept us in the match and gave Eugene the opportunity to win it for us...which he did."

The Violets now look ahead to Wednesday, April 16, at 3:30pm, when they face the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.
