Men’s Tennis Downs Division I Fordham for Third Straight Win
04/02/08
The New York University men's tennis team defeated inner-city rival and Division I foe Fordham University 5-2 on Wednesday, April 2, in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets (5-6) won six of the nine matches played on the day, including four of the six singles matches. NYU is 3-2 against Fordham (1-10), who competes in the Division I Atlantic-10 Conference, in their previous five matches dating back to 2003.
NYU, winners of three straight matches, started off the afternoon by winning two of the three doubles matches. As a result, the Violets secured the one point allotted to the team that wins at least two of the three doubles matches.
Senior co-captain Mikhail Gurevich, junior co-captain Calvin Chou, and junior Brett Levin were all victorious in both their singles matches and their doubles matches for NYU. It was the second straight singles victory for all three Violet players.
The combination of Gurevich and Levin in #1 doubles, as well as the combination of Chou and freshman Matt Gross in #2 doubles, have also been triumphant in two consecutive matches.
"It was a great result for us," said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "The team overcame difficult weather conditions coupled with some rule changes but were able to make key adjustments along the way that were essential to our victory."
The Violets return to the court Sunday, April 6, at 2:00pm, when they host Queens College at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, on the annual Family/Alumni Day.
