Men’s Tennis Completes Unbeaten Weekend

03/30/08

After posting a 9-0 victory over Hobart College on Saturday, The New York University men's tennis team completed a winning weekend by defeating Ithaca College 5-4 on Sunday, March 30, in Ithaca, NY.

The Violets (4-6) were matched point-for-point for nearly the entire afternoon by the Bombers of Ithaca. After losing the first two doubles matches to start off of the day, the NYU tandem of freshmen Michael Greene and Phillip Rosenstein won the #3 doubles match in a tiebreak, a win that proved significant.

“That third doubles win was important,” exclaimed NYU head coach Horace Choy. “The win kept us in the match, and was a big momentum boost for our team.”

With the momentum in hand, senior captain Mikhail Gurevich, who is currently ranked #16 in the northeast region, junior Calvin Chou, who is ranked #22 in the region, and junior Craig Berger went on to win their singles matches, thrusting NYU into the lead.

After falling in the #4 and #5 singles matches, the Violets were tied 4-4 going into the final singles contest. In an exhilarating final match, sophomore P.J Marranca defeated Ithaca’s Jeff Buffum 6-4, 6-3, securing the win for NYU.

“Our upperclassmen stepped up in a big way today,” coach Choy said. “Mikhail, Calvin, and Craig won three big matches in a row that propelled our team to victory. It was a little tight at the end, but P.J prevailed and produced a huge win in the end for us.”

The Violets return to the court Wednesday, April 2, to compete against Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.
