Men’s Tennis Team Has Strong Showing at ECAC Championships

ECAC Championship Results

The men’s tennis team finished in sixth place at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which were held Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

NYU accumulated seven points in the 10-team competition. The University of Delaware and Fairfield University tied for first place with 15 points each.

A pair of Violets reached the semifinals of their respective flights.

In flight one, NYU senior co-captain Mikhail Gurevich won his quarterfinal match on Saturday by defeating Jason Bonilla of Moravian College (6-0, 6-0). On Sunday, however, he fell to Colgate University's Martin MacIntyre 6-2, 6-4.

Violet sophomore Paul Marranca, meanwhile, won Saturday's quarterfinal match in flight four in three sets, beating William Sacco from Oneonta State University 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. On Sunday, he was blanked by Delaware's Chris Hinker 6-0, 6-0..

On Saturday, Violet junior co-captain Calvin Chou played into the quarterfinals by beating Tim Koch from Loyola College (6-0, 6-0), but then lost to Lehigh's Troy List (6-3, 7-6).

“I thought it was a good performance for our first tournament of the season,” NYU head coach Horace Choy said. “We faced many strong teams and players. Hopefully, we will continue to progress as the season moves on.”

The Violets return to the court next weekend when they compete at the ITA Northeast Championships at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
