Gurevich Earns UAA Tennis Honor

05/05/08

New York University men's tennis player Mikhail Gurevich has earned Second Team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors.

The Violets' senior captain earned the recognition following a season in which he posted an overall singles record of 21-5, including a 16-3 mark in dual matches at #1.

Gurevich, a UAA Athlete of the Week honoree on April 7, is ranked #12 in singles in the northeast region by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Gurevich was undefeated at #1 singles (3-0) at the UAA Championship tournament last month, helping the Violets to an overall fifth-place team finish.

“Mikhail had a terrific performance at the UAA's,” said NYU head coach Horace Choy. "Having him do well at the top of the lineup really gave our team a lot of confidence."

NYU finished strongly down the stretch of Gurevich's outstanding career, winning eight of its final 11 matches, ending with a 10-9 overall record and a #14 ranking in the ITA Northeast Region.

A two-time ITA Division III All-American and a former Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) North #1 Singles Champion, Gurevich finished his brilliant four-year NYU career as the program's all-time leader with 71 wins.

“Mikhail has meant a tremendous amount to this team and to our program," Choy concluded. "I’m happy with the way he capped off his career.”
