Women's Swimming & Diving Wins ECAC Championships

The New York University women's swimming and diving team won the Easern College Athletic Conference Championships (ECAC). The team held the lead throughout the event and closed it out on Sunday, December 2.

The Violets finished with a total of 641.50 points, with SUNY-Geneseo taking second with 535.50 points.

Overall, sophomore Patti Beck had the third-highest individual point total, providing the team with 73 points.

Beck was also a triple NCAA "B" qualifier with her first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:08.87), second-place finish in the 400 IM (4:38.70) and third- place finish in the 100 backstroke (59.87).

Freshman Chelsea Pfohl was the other NCAA "B" qualifer for the team, with her winning time in the 100 backstroke (58.91).

Beck also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.27 and was a part of the winning 800 freestyle relay along with freshman Alexandra Strzempko, and sophomores Kacey McCaffrey and Danielle Hildebrandt.

Overall, three new school records were set at the Championships. They included Pfohl's time in the 100 backstroke, as well as both the 200 medley relay (1:50.73) and 800 freestyle relay (7:55.07).

"I am very pleased with how we performed throughout the Championships," said head coach Lauren Beam, who was also awarded as Coach of the Meet. "Our goal was to make as many NCAA cuts as we could, and we did that. We will be doing a lot of training in preparation for the second half of the season and we are hoping to get a relay team into the NCAA's."

The Violets' next return to the pool comes on January 8 at the Fort Lauderdale Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
