
Women's Swimming & Diving Wins Opener Over Queens College

The New York University women's swimming and diving team began the 2007-08 season on a strong note, defeating Queens College 164-104 on Wednesday in Flushing, NY.
Sophomore Patricia Beck got her season off to a fast start by picking up victories in the 200 freestyle (2:02.45) and the 200 IM (2:19.06). She also tied for first with teammate and senior captain Amy Gartman in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.96.
Senior captain Dorota Sawicz also got off to a strong start, posting a victory in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.75.
Freshman Michelle Surjaputra began her college career on a high note, taking the 1,000 freestyle in 11:24.63.
The Violets also swept the one-meter diving event, as junior Melanie Peters (395.25 points), junior Molly Hawkinson (352.275), and senior captain Virginia Milano finished 1-3, respectively.
The Violets return to action this Friday when they host Stevens Institute of Technology and SUNY Cortland in the 2007 NYU Invitational at the Palladium Athletic Facility. The first diving event will begin at 3:00 pm, with the first swimming events starting at 4:30 pm.
The meet will also be a "Tear It Up" event with free food and giveaways for all students in attendance.
