02/23/08
The New York University men's swimming & diving team finished in third place and junior Andrew Lardiere won seven events at the 2008 University Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships, which were held in Rochester, NY, Wednesday-Friday, February 20-23.
The Violets accumulated 1,315 points, less than 100 behind second-place Carnegie Mellon University (1,413). Emory University won the championship with 1,704 points.
In Saturday's final session, Lardiere won the 100 freestyle (NYU record 45.54) and teamed with sophomore Eric Pcholinski, senior captain Brad Thornton and senior Chris Wolff to win the 400 free relay (3:04.26)
Lardiere was involved in two winning performances on Friday, capturing the 200 free (1:40.98) and taking part in the Violets' victorious 200 medley relay (NYU record 1:32.98) along with senior captain Matt Ferreira, Thornton and senior Shaughn Keating.
On Thursday, Lardiere won the 50 freestyle (20:86) and set NYU and UAA records with his 20.64 time in the preliminaries (also a NCAA "A" qualifying time).
Also on Thursday, Lardiere combined with Ferreira, Thornton and senior Andrew Guyton to win the 400 medley relay in an NYU-record time of 3:26.59. He then teamed with Thornton, Keating and Pcholinski to win the 200 free relay in another NYU and UAA record-breaking (and NCAA "A" cut) performance (1:22.86).
On Saturday, freshman Max Norris won his second diving event of the competition, capturing the one meter with 447.84 points. The Rochester native also won the three-meter dive on Thursday with a NCAA-qualifying score of 468.65.
"Max's performance at the Championships was sensational," said diving coach Scott Donie, now in his eighth season at NYU. "He is the first diver I've ever had to win both events at the UAA's in the same season...and he's only a freshman!"
Also on Saturday, junior Paul Hogan won the 1,650 free in a NYU-record and NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 15:51.24. His split time of 9:37.89 for 1,000 yards was also a NYU record.
Thornton, who produced a second-place finish in the 200 IM in a NYU-record time of 1:54.72, also earned a NCAA "B" cut with his NYU-record performance of 1:53.72 in the preliminaries.
Thornton also set a NYU record with his time of 57.39 in the 100 breast.
