09/21/07
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its list of Academic All-Americans for the Spring 2007 semester today, with five members of the Violets’ men’s swimming team making the list. In order to earn the honor, a swimmer must have carried a minimum of a 3.50 grade point average (GPA) for the entire 2006-07 academic year.
Heading the list for the Violets was junior Paul Hogan with a 3.72 GPA. In addition to his accomplishments in the classroom, Hogan earned All-America status after helping the Violets place eighth in the 800 free relay (6:51.07) at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships.
“Paul is our premier distance swimmer and his versatility also extends to the 200 butterfly,” NYU head coach Bob Sorensen said.
Senior co-captain Brad Thornton posted a 3.62 GPA for the 2006-07 year. He earned five All-America honors and helped set team records in the 400 free relay (3:03.11) and the 800 free relay (6:51.07).
“Brad is our most versatile swimmer. We look to him continuing his winning ways and providing good leadership to our underclassmen,” Sorensen said.
Junior Eric Wang, who earned a 3.61 GPA, qualified for the 2007 NCAA Championships, set a school record in the 400 IM (4:04.26), and placed second in the 400 IM at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships (4:04.71).
“Eric was our most valuable swimmer during the 2006-07 dual-meet season. He is a team leader whom I will count on to help carry us through the ’07-08 season,” Sorensen explained.
Sophomore Eric Pcholinski, who accumulated a 3.60 GPA, Pcholinski enjoyed one of the most successful rookie seasons for NYU in ’06-07. He earned All-America status and helped the Violets set school records in the 400 free relay (3:03.11) and the 800 free relay (6:51.07).
“Eric will be a strong force on our relays in the next three years and has also improved greatly in the butterfly,” Sorensen stated.
Rounding out the list for the Violets is senior Chris Wolff, who earned a 3.51 GPA last year and was a member of the Violets’ record-breaking and All-America 400 free relay (3:03.11).
“Chris has really improved since he started with the team,” Sorensen added. “We look for him to continue to improve his times and again provide strength to the relays.
“Overall, I am very proud of the team’s accomplishments both in the classroom and in the pool,” Sorensen continued. “I look forward to continued outstanding performances from this group.”
Overall, NYU finished tied for the eighth-highest GPA in the nation (along with MacalesterColege). Both institutions complied cumulative 3.410 team GPA'.
The Violets open their season on October 19 when they host the NYU Invitational at the Palladium Athletic Facility (PAF) Natatorium.
