Women's Soccer Earns #4 Seed in ECAC Tourney, Will Face #5 Ramapo

Fresh off one of its finest regular seasons ever, the New York University women's soccer team earned the #4 seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metropolitan Tournament and will face #5 Ramapo College on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 2:30 p.m. in Mahwah, NJ.

This is the Violets' (10-6-2, 1-5-1 UAA) first postseason appearance since 2002, when they won their only University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and reached the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship's Sweet 16.

"It's a great accomplishment for the team and the players for what they've done this year," NYU first-year head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "It's great to have sunch an opportunity. Any postseason tournament is a great opportunity. We're eager to play."

NYU got off to its best-ever start to a season, going 10-0-1 in its first 11 matches. This included winning the Skidmore College Classic (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) and beating Case Western Reserve University 4-0 on Sept. 29 for its first UAA-opening victory since 2004.

Along the way, the Violets were ranked as high as #24 by d3kicks.com, their first national ranking since 2002. They also forged a scoreless draw at UAA rival Emory University, an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship participant, on Oct. 28.

The Violets have received plenty of production from their young players, as three of their top-five scorers were freshmen: Rebecca Assing (team-high 8 goals, team-high tying 16 points), Laura Palumbo (4-4-12) and Filiz Kipcakli (4-3-11).

Other Violets to watch offensively include junior forward Sarah Pillemer (7-2-16) and sophomore midfielder Lucy Dolly Caires (2-7-16).

Defensively, junior Alyssa Simon, sophomores Nicole Stutz and Erin Twomey, and freshman Katie Gaston played solidly in front of senior goalkeeper Katie Barnes (10-6-2, 1.04 GAA, 8 shutouts).

"It's important to get as much experience as you can, to be able to compete and to play," Dasbach said. "I believe our players deserve an opportunity to play in the postseason."
