Women's Soccer Stopped On Road by Carnegie Mellon

10/26/07

Despite getting a goal from sophomore forward Sarah Lensing, the New York University women's soccer team could not quell a strong second-half showing by Carnegie Mellon University in a 5-1 loss to its University Athletic Association rival (UAA) on Friday night in Pittsburgh.

The Violets (10-5-1, 1-4 UAA) allowed two goals in a second-half span of 5:17 as the Tartans (8-4-2, 3-1-1) broke the match open.

After Valerie Corvino converted a breakaway to give Carnegie Mellon a 1-0 lead at 22:35, Lensing provided the equalizer just 51 seconds after entering as a substitute. She took a pass from freshman defender Katie Gaston in the top of the box, maneuvered into the middle and her shot tickled the twine for her second score of the season.

However, the Tartans' Kasey Stever scored the first of her two goals at 44:08 from 15 yards out off a cross from Eleonore Valencia to give the home team a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Stever struck again at 54:10 with a one-timer off Amanda Rose's free kick. Rose then converted a 45-yard free kick at 59:27 to give Carnegie Mellon a 4-1 advantage. Jessica Howard capped the scoring at 74:26 by converting a rebound of an Adrienne Pajer shot.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Barnes made two saves and allowed four goals in 66:59 before yielding to junior Rebekah Kramer, who made one save and surrendered one goal in 23:01 of action.

Anya Rosen made one save for Carnegie Mellon, which owned a 15-4 edge on shots and did not allow the Violets to fire off a second-half attempt.

NYU owned a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks while suffering its fifth consecutive setback.

The Violets return to action Sunday, Oct. 28, when they travel to Atlanta to face Emory University at 1:30 p.m.
