#24 Women's Soccer Bows to #8/12 Washington 2-1

10/12/07

Despite getting a career-high tying 14 saves from senior co-captain Katie Barnes, as well as junior forward Sarah Pillemer's seventh goal of the season, the New York University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback against University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Washington University on Friday afternoon at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

After going unbeaten in their first 11 matches, the Violets (10-2-1, 1-2 UAA), ranked #24 by d3kicks.com, have dropped two consecutive contests.

Despite spotting the Bears (11-1, 2-1 UAA) a 2-0 lead, the Violets pulled within 2-1 at 52:25 when Pillemer collected a long lead ball from sophomore forward Nan Moses on a breakaway, then floated a shot into the twine over the head of Washington senior goalkeeper Carrie Sear.

Freshman Filiz Kipcakli took a corner kick with one minute remaining, but the Violets were unable to get off a shot off.

Overall, the Violets were outshot 32-4 in the contest.

Ranked #8 by d3kicks.com and #12 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas National Rankings, Washington struck just three minutes into the contest when sophomore back Cassie Scaman produced her first tally of 2007. After a corner kick by junior back Libby Held, Scaman collected a loose ball and blasted it into the waiting hands of Barnes. However, the rebound caromed onto the foot of Scaman, whose second shot from eight feet out found the back of the net.

At 41:44, the Bears seized a 2-0 advantage when junior midfielder Samantha Murphy netted her first goal of the year off a feed from junior back Carly Anderson. Washington outshot NYU 18-1 in the first half.

Sear made one save in 55:07 before yielding to junior Amanda Boe, who put aside one shot in the final 34:53.

NYU returns to action Sunday, Oct. 14, when it hosts UAA rival the University of Chicago at 1:30 pm at the College of Staten Island. Prior to the match, Barnes will be honored as the Violets' lone graduating senior.
