A goal late in the first half proved the difference as the New York University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of 2007, dropping a 1-0 decision Saturday night at University Athletic Association (UAA) rival the University of Rochester.

Ranked #19 by d3kicks.com, the Violets (10-1-1, 1-1 UAA) saw their school-record 11-match undefeated streak to start a season snapped.

Entering the match, the NYU defense had allowed just three goals and kept opponents off the scoreboard for a stretch of 458:37. That streak ended at 503:27 when the Yellowjackets (7-3, 2-0 UAA) produced the lone score of the match.

Rochester's goal came off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Mae Butler, which set up junior midfielder Laura Bojko at 44:50.

Meanwhile, the Violets got off just two shots in the contest compared to 14 by the Yellowjackets. Rochester also owned an 8-3 edge on corner kicks.

For NYU, senior co-captain Katie Barnes made five saves in the loss. Senior Molly Leitch put aside one shot in the loss for Rochester.

"Katie's play was inspiring," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "Overall, the effort of the team was good. We got stronger as the game went on. I thought it was a strong performance, regardless of the result."

The Violets return to action Friday, Oct. 12, when they will host UAA rival Washington University at 1:30 p.m. at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. The game will be a "Tear It Up" Event.
