10/03/07
Freshmen Rebecca Assing and Filiz Kipcakli netted first-half goals, while senior goalkeeper Katie Barnes helped the New York University women's soccer team extend its respective undefeated and shutout streaks with a 2-0 victory over William Paterson University on Wednesday night at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
Ranked #19 in d3kicks.com, the Violets (10-0-1) continued their finest start to a season ever while pushing its stretch of holding opponents scoreless to 458:37 as Barnes made seven saves for her seventh clean sheet this season.
William Paterson (6-5) threaded together a couple of scoring chances before NYU took control with two goals in the final 4:29 of the first half. Assing leaped and headed home her sixth goal of the season, and third game-winner, at 40:31 off a cross from fellow freshman Britta Gauthier.
The Violets struck again at 43:40 when sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires slid a cross into the box that Kipcakli tapped home from about five yards out. It proved to be Kipcakli's fourth goal of the season, while Caires notched her team-high seventh assist.
"It was a very inspiring first half when we got forward," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "Those were two fantastic goals we scored. Credit to William Paterson, they came out with an excellent second half. We couldn't have asked for a better opponent tonight to get us ready for Rochester on Saturday."
The Pioneers threatened late in the match and ended up dominating in shots (20-12), forcing the Violets to work to continue their win and shutout streaks.
William Paterson junior Kelly Bray appeared to cut the deficit in half, but her shot was cleared off the backline by freshman Emily Jenkinson. Jenkinson and Barnes stopped attempts by junior Amanda Fabiano and Bray in the 78th minute, while junior and leading scorer Amanda Kurdyla fired a rocket off the right post in the 81st minute. Kurdyla also had a chance in the 89th minute that Barnes stifled immediately.
"It's a credit to all the players who are playing back there," Dasbach said. "They are doing a great job of staying connected, fighting, and then putting us in a position to score by winning the ball."
Sophomore Meaghan Baker made six saves for William Paterson, which held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
NYU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6, when it travels to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival the University of Rochester for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
