Women's Soccer Stonewalls Wilkes 2-0; Undefeated Streak at Nine
09/23/07
Senior Katie Barnes made four saves to preserve her career-high fourth shutout as the New York University women's soccer team stayed undefeated with a 2-0 road victory over Wilkes University on Sunday afternoon in Edwardsville, PA.
Barnes bested her previous personal-best of four shutouts set in 2006 for the Violets (8-0-1). The senior co-captain has factored into each of NYU's decisions this season, tallying her career best in victories in the process.
Barnes and the Violet backline of sophomores Samantha Nick, Erin Twomey and Nicole Stutz told a good part of the story Sunday, as NYU continued its program-record start to a season despite getting outshot 10-9 by the Colonels (3-5-0).
"They have been excellent because they are connected. And it shows with our results," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "One of the things I wanted was being connected without the ball, and we're doing that. We're getting better everyday."
However, NYU did own a 7-1 edge on corner kicks and made one of them count at 22:49. Sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires served a nifty ball into the box that freshman Jane Barrett tapped into the twine for her first collegiate goal. It also ended up being her first game-winning score.
At 40:47, two more of the Violets' rookies teamed up for an insurance tally when Emily Jenkinson netted her second goal this fall off a feed from Britta Gauthier.
"Everyone's contributing. It's exciting from that standpoint," Dasbach said. "There were some inspired moments going forward, and that's good. Everyone's for the most part healthy, so we're excited. We had a very good first half."
NYU will take five days off before opening its University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule Saturday, Sept. 29, when it hosts Case Western Reserve University. Kick-off time is 1:30 p.m. at Manhattan College in the Bronx.
