Women's Soccer Continues Torrid Start by Blanking Manhattanville 3-0
09/21/07
Freshman Rebecca Assing and junior Sarah Pillemer scored 65 seconds apart to start the second half as the New York University women's soccer team surged past Manhattanville College 3-0 on a sunny Friday afternoon at Pier 40 in Manhattan.
NYU (7-0-1) continued its best-ever start to a season despite enduring a scoreless first 45 minutes in which it owned huge advantages in shots (20-3) and corner kicks (10-0).
The Violets struck quickly in the second half, when Assing headed a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires into an open net at 52:52 for her third tally of the season. It also proved to be Assing's second game-winning score.
Just 65 seconds later, Pillemer collected a long ball off a set piece lofted by freshman Emily Jenkinson. Pillemer got behind the Manhattanville (0-8-1) defense and blasted a shot into the twine from five yards out.
Pillemer netted her fifth tally of 2007 at 79:34, taking a feed from junior Rebecca Houston and rocketing a blast into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards away to make it 3-0.
"They were both restart goals, so that's great," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "We addressed at halftime how important it is to execute. Rebecca Assing did what is expected with her run and, as a result, scored.
"On the second goal," Dasbach continued, "it was a great service from Emily as we worked on and discussed in practice, and a great finish by Sarah."
All told, NYU dominated play in this non-conference clash between local rivals, possessing sizable edges on shots (33-6) and corner kicks (13-2).
NYU senior Katie Barnes made one save in 61:06 before yielding to junior Rebekah Kramer, who also made one save in finishing up for the Violets.
Freshman Ali Bromson recorded 12 saves for Manhattanville. Junior Cybil Robinson fired off five of the Valiants' six shots.
NYU will take a day off before returning to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 23, with a 1 p.m. non-conference match at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
