Women's Soccer Defeats Allegheny 2-0

09/16/07

Freshman Rebecca Assing scored the game-winning goal and senior Katie Barnes made a career-high 13 saves to preserve the shutout as the New York University women's soccer team fended off Allegheny College for a 2-0 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon at the College of Staten Island.

Junior Sarah Pillemer added her career-high fourth goal with 2:46 remaining as the Violets improved to 6-0-1, their best start ever.

Allegheny dipped to 1-4-1 despite owning a 17-16 edge on shots.

"Allegheny was prepared for the game and they were very well coached," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "It was a great game for us because we had to stay connected."

NYU started forcing much of the action late in the first half, and that carried over into the second half. The Violets finally saw their efforts prove fruitful at the 58:07 mark when Assing tapped home a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires for her second score of the season.

Allegheny had pushed much of the early action, keeping the NYU defense honest while Barnes played one of her best games ever in a Violet uniform. In accumulating her 13 saves, Barnes also tied her career high by posting her fourth shutout of the season. This included a stellar leaping save of a shot by Allegheny junior Katie Murphy at 36:09 that preserved the scoreless deadlock.

"This is the best shooting team we've seen, so it was more active in the back. We've been waiting for a game like this," Barnes explained. "I think we managed it well. I didn't have to do too much in the second half. We adjusted to their wide players."

Pillemer established career highs for goals (4) and points (10) by converting a breakaway off a nifty lead pass from freshman Britta Gauthier at 87:14.

"As the game grew longer," Dasbach said, "we got better and stronger."

Kelsie Mozzoni made six saves in the loss for Allegheny.

NYU returns to action Friday, Sept. 21, when it hosts non-conference rival Manhattanville College at 1 p.m. at Pier 40 in Manhattan.
