Sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires contributed a goal and an assist in the first 13 minutes, helping the New York University women's soccer team remain undefeated with a 2-1 victory over Vassar College on Friday afternoon in Riverdale, NY, at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park.

With the win, the Violets (5-0-1) matched their best start to a season during the 21st Century. NYU also opened the 2006 campaign with a 5-0-1 record.

"It's a great result against a team that fought very hard," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "They were physically big. Because of their size and their drive, it was a tough match. This type of match is going to serve us well in preparation for our University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule."

Caires set up the Violets' first score 4:20 into the tilt, placing a corner kick right onto the head of classmate Nicole Stutz, who directed it across the goal line for her first collegiate goal. Caires increased NYU's lead to 2-0 at the 12:55 mark, lofting a free kick into the top left corner of the net after a Vassar foul.

"It's always good to get two quick goals off restarts," Dasbach said. "But, a lot of credit goes to Vassar because they fought hard throughout."

Indeed, the Brewers (1-2) kept pushing forward even down 2-0. Their efforts finally materialized in a goal by sophomore Anna Robinson with 8:32 remaining. Robinson beat two NYU defenders and drilled a blast into the top left corner of the net, cutting the Violet lead to 2-1.

Overall, Vassar owned a 16-13 edge on shots.

Senior Katie Barnes recorded eight saves for NYU. For Vassar, junior Anne Hutchinson made five second-half saves after coming on in relief of sophomore Molly Mackin, who put aside one shot in the first 45 minutes before being switched to a field position.

NYU will look to continue its undefeated streak Sunday, Sept. 16, when it hosts Allegheny College. Kickoff time is 2 p.m. at the College of Staten Island.
