Women's Soccer Forges Scoreless Tie With #15 Stevens Tech

New York University extended its season-opening undefeated streak to five matches, forging a 0-0 tie with Stevens Institute of Technology (#15 National Soccer Coaches' Association of America/adidas) in the championship game of the Stevens Engineering Cup on Sunday afternoon in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Although the match officially counted as a tie, Stevens (2-1-1) captured its fourth tournament title in as many tries, outlasting the Violets (4-0-1) 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout.

“It was an excellent effort from both teams,” NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. “Stevens is an excellent team, very well coached, and it was a great environment for our team to play in. Both teams had great opportunities. We’re pleased with our effort, but we expected a better result.”

In all, it was an evenly played match with both teams forcing opportunities only to see them denied. For NYU, junior forward Sarah Pillemer fired off a team-high six shots, but put a couple of close opportunities just wide of the goal. In fact, the Violets appeared to score the lone goal of regulation when Pillemer collected a loose ball and fired it home after a corner kick at the 26:18 mark, but there was a late whistle saying that the corner kick went out of bounds before curling into the field of play.

In the two extra sessions, Violets’ senior co-captain and goalkeeper Katie Barnes (five saves) punched two potential game-winning free kicks off the crossbar and eventually out of harm’s way, including a stop of Salme Cook’s shot at the 107:33 mark.

Sherry Rosenberg made four saves for the Ducks.

Overall, Stevens owned a 19-16 edge in shots, while NYU claimed a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Violets return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 14, when they host Vassar College at 1 p.m. at Manhattan College.
