09/05/07
Freshman forward Laura Palumbo tickled the twice twice, as the New York University women's soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 5-1 non-conference victory over Famingdale State University on Wednesday evening in Farmingdale, NY.
All five Violet goals came from freshmen, including three rookies producing their first collegiate tallies.
NYU broke into the scoring column 10:31 into the action when Britta Gauthier used her head to deposit a corner kick off the foot of sophomore Lucy Dolly Caires.
Farmingdale State netted the equalizer on an unassisted score by Alyssa Fleming. However, the Violets responded 33 seconds later with the first of four unanswered goals. Sophomore Nicole Stutz won a ball at midfield and slid a pass through the seams to Palumbo, setting up a breakaway that saw the rookie put NYU ahead 2-1.
The Violets saw a handful of scoring opportunities stonewalled in the first half and entered intermission ahead only one goal. However, NYU used a swift surge down the stretch to pull away.
At 75:58, freshman Jane Barrett and junior Sarah Pillemer executed a give-and-go, with Pillemer floating a perfect cross that rookie Filiz Kipcakli headed home for her second score of the season.
NYU tacked onto its 3-1 lead at 83:56 when Kipcakli beat a defender along the endline and set up a successful header by freshman Rebecca Assing that made it 4-1.
Palumbo ended the scoring at 88:20 after collecting a free kick off the foot of classmate Rebecca Houston and blasting it into the net.
"Not only are our freshman getting it done, but we have a lot of returning players setting up goals," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "We have a lot of players stepping up and contributing and scoring some very inspiring goals."
Senior co-captain Katie Barnes stopped two shots for the Violets, who owned sizable edges in shots (25-6) and corner kicks (7-1).
Kimberly Sontag made 10 saves for the Rams.
NYU will look to extend its undefeated streak Saturday, Sept. 8, when it faces North Park University in the first round of the Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup. Match time is 2:30 p.m. in Hoboken, NJ.
