Women's Soccer Blanks Westfield State, Captures Skidmore Classic
09/01/07
A goal by junior forward Sarah Pillemer in the 71st minute provided all of the offense needed as the New York University women's soccer team notched a 1-0 win over Westfield State College and captured the Skidmore College Classic championship on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY.
With the victory, the Violets were the only team to finish 2-0 in the season-opening tournament. NYU outscored Skidmore and Westfield State (0-2) by a combined 3-0.
NYU controlled the action throughout, but finally capitalized at the 70:57 mark when Pillemer, a Second Team All-University Athletic Association selection in 2006, collected a ball in the box and beat two Westfield State defenders. Upon gaining control, Pillemer volleyed her first goal of the season over the head of Westfield State goalkeeper Karissa Brunoli (11 saves).
"We dominated in the second half," Violets' head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "It was fun to watch, exciting. An excellent performance on the road from everyone."
Senior co-captain Katie Barnes posted her second straight shutout, putting aside three shots. This included punching aside a high shot in the final two minutes.
NYU owned a 19-3 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge on corner kicks. In the second half, the Violets outshot its opponent 13-1.
"All the credit goes to the players," Dasbach said. "They fought, they played together and they were inspiring."
NYU resumes action Wednesday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Farmingdale State University for a 5 pm contest.
