Women's Soccer Stifles Skidmore, Gives Dasbach 1st Win in Opener
08/31/07
Freshman Filiz Kipcakli enjoyed an auspicious collegiate debut, helping first-year head coach Werner T. Dasbach earn his first victory as the New York University women’s soccer team posted a 2-0 triumph over Skidmore College in the Skidmore Classic on Friday in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Kipcakli came off the bench and proved herself instantly as an offensive catalyst, assisting on sophomore forward Sarah Lensing’s goal in the 49th minute and adding an insurance tally off a feed from junior forward Sarah Pillemer in the 60th minute.
“It’s very exciting. It’s a great win considering we’re on the road and beat an excellent first opponent,” Dasbach said. “We reacted without the ball. We were connected with the ball. We were dangerous going forward. And, there was a strong team spirit with the players on the field and the players off it.”
NYU got all of the offense it needed at the 48:15 mark, when Kipcakli took control of the ball, found a forward seam and slid the ball through to Lensing. The sophomore then slid behind a pair of Skidmore defenders and pushed the ball across the goal line.
Kipcakli tickled the twine at 59:51 on what Dasbach enthusiastically dubbed “a beautiful goal.” Pillemer won a ball from a Skidmore player, then found her freshman teammate. Kipcakli then spun around an opposing defender to create distance, then blasted a strong shot from the top of the box off her right foot into the top left corner.
“She got an opportunity and she maximized her opportunity by being dangerous and being productive,” Dasbach said.
The Violets’ defense also did its part, with senior goalkeeper Katie Barnes putting aside seven shots. Barnes earned high praise for her opening effort from Dasbach, who said, “She kept the players organized in front of her. She was a strong presence.”
NYU was outshot in the contest (14-11) and narrowly lost the battle of corner kicks (5-4).
Lisa Mills stopped five shots for Skidmore.
The Violets will face Westfield State College on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 2 pm in hopes of capturing the Skidmore Classic championship. A victory could lock up the title for NYU, although if the Violets and another team have 2-0 records the tiebreaker is goal differential.
